I'm fairly sure M20s can only be built to about 3.1 liters using parts that you can readily buy. And at that point, it's probably gonna get shitty mileage because you will want an aggressive cam, high compression pistons, headers, etc... Basically everything to make the maximum output without worrying about economy.

With an M30 you can leave it stock and probably make the same or similar output figures as a very modified M20, it will last longer, and possibly even get better mileage (possibly, my 3.2 liter in a 3200lb car gets 27mpg+ on the highway). With some head work, a cam, headers, and fuel injection modifications an M30 can see 260hp+, and with a TCD Stage 1 kit running less than 10 pounds of boost, they make around 300rwp and 340rwft/lbs!!

As Spunky said, the M30 is 58lbs heavier than the M20. There are a few older threads in this section about M30 swapped cars vs M20 powered cars and handling, with a bunch of good info. Basically if you ditch your AC system and install an M30 in position II or III on Tino's mounts, you will not really upset the balance of your E30. Alpina simply used E30 M3 Air Con springs on the front of their B6 and B6S to counteract the added weight, and the road tests from back in the day claimed that they experienced only a fraction more understeer, right at the limit.

M30 is heavier, plus if you do a 3.1 litre M20 it will be freshly built
With all the money you save with the m30 you can add all kinds of goodies to it. It's always good to start with 210+ HP and Torque as a baseline, instead of 160's. Plus having a timing chain is always good too.

will an m30 run on a 380 computer? what kind ofwiring mess is involved in an 87 e30 , what driveshaft do you use? would it be best to get m30 from an old 6 seiries or late 80's 7 sereis? there is a few here inmy local junkyard , I might check into.

I don't know what the 380 is, but here is how most swaps go down:

Custom motor mounts, complete M30 (B34 or B35, it's up to you, if you don't know what those are you can ask me), engine wiring harness, ECU, and AFM from the donor car. If the plugs on the wiring harness and the fuse box in the E30 don't match, it's no big deal, the entire wiring / splicing needed to get the car running is generally less than 15 wires... In my case I think it was 8. If you get the right year harness to fit your E30, it could plug right in, but there are some variables that play into this as far as chassis and harness years.

The bottom line is that the wiring is the least of your worries... Building the exhaust more difficult, and getting the correct shift linkage can be tricky as well. The driveshaft selection depends on the transmission you use... Some people have used 325e automatic shafts, some have used E34 535i shafts, E30 M3 shafts, etc. I used a 6 series front half that I had shortened 1 3/16", and a stock 325e rear half. Cost me $200 and worked perfectly.

Edit: I may as well explain B34 and B35 engine choices while I'm sitting here... The B34 is super common, found in E28 5 series, E24 6 series (please don't cut one of these up), and E23 7 series. In us trim it makes about 185hp and 215ft/lbs. These will fit if you install an E34 535i / E32 735i oil pan and pump, which can be found on ebay for a pretty reasonable amount of money. The pan and pump are required because the B34 pan does not clear the steering rack on the E30. The B35 motor is the more desirable motor of the two, and is found in E34 535is and E32 735is, as well as 1988 and 1989 635CSis (again, please don't cut one of these up - restore it if you find one). The B35 makes 208hp (or 211 depending on your source) and around 230ft/lbs, and should already come with the correct pan and pump, unless it comes out of a 6 series... The B34 has 8:1 compression and a wussy 260 degree cam, the B35 has 9:1 compression and a cam with over 270 degrees duration, as well as a revised cylinder head, intake and exhaust manifolds. If you get lucky and find a euro spec motor, you will be the super pimp. Euro B34s make 218hp and around 230ft/lbs, and have 10:1 compression, but are hard to find in the US, obviously.

          Short version:
          M30B34 - Common - 185hp - 215ft/lbs - needs pan and pump to fit E30
          M30B35 - Less common - 208hp - 230ft/lbs - may have correct pan already if it's from a 7 series

Note, I am certain that the E32 pan and pump are correct, but not 100% sure that the E34s had the same pieces... Can someone confirm this?

Be sure to get plenty of info on WIRING!!!! I know thats going to be my biggest issue.. Im using an engine harness from a 87 635csi b/c it has the crank sensors on it for the transmission. How hard will it be to hook it up to the fuse box you think? I only had to cut 1 green wire from the 6 series fusebox to get the harness out in piece.

I am doing the exact same thing Spunky :)

Both the 2nd and 3rd Generations are M30B34's, they are both 3430cc's.

The newer ones have larger valves and motronic 1.1/1.3.

And both e32/e34 have the right oil pan.
