Both sets had wear when I checked them out @315k. It's cheap, do both, IMO.

This one is at 1/2 the mileage, I've read that these bottom ends usually don't wear out as much as the 4cyl models so maybe I'll just leave it alone.

I did order a new water pump/t-stat and about to order a new clutch kit. Are the e34 535i clutch kits the same as 635csi and e28 535i?

From autohausaz, m5 clutch will be overkill (and will require m5 flywheel?) if the engine isn't boosted no?

I used autohausaz and picked a 91 735i and it shows 11241258428 for a set of bearings, but according to realoem these are not for E32/E34.

                    Can someone confirm this?

                    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...70&hg=11&fg=20

What is the deal with RED and BLUE bearings? Do I have to get 6 of each?

Sent autohausaz an email to confirm if the part number was correct:

"Thank you for submitting your part inquiry with Autohaus Arizona. Part
                      number 11 24 1 258 428 / 6 would be the correct standard main bearing
set for the 1988 through 1992 BMW M30 engines used in the E32 735i and
E34 535i. This is a complete bearing set for the six cylinder engines
and is manufactured by Glyco, which is a division of Federal-Mogul."

You do not need an m5 flywheel to run the m5 clutch. I am running an e28 "light" flywheel and it lines up just fine. I did go the cheap route however - grip-force. I bought the e28 m5 stage 2 clutch kit, which came out to about $300 shipped. I have used these guys in a previous e30 I had and had no problems with them, other than a bad TOB that I replaced with an oem unit. The m5 kit came with a sachs pressure plate if that matters.

Just throwing it out there as an option.

Made some progress today, tore into the bottom end and cleaned up the pistons. Next week new piston rings/bearings are getting installed along with the rest of it if time permits.

Old timing rails after 160k miles:

Original rod bearings didn't show much wear

                          old vs new

                          can see the wear here

Chains didn't appear to be stretched

rods and pistons removed and marked

                          before cleaning

after some cleaning, the oil ring groove was a bitch to clean

                          close up of original piston

No wear noticed on the crank

                          cyl. walls

                          wtfbbq

                          That's it for today.

I ended up ordering std. rod and main bearings since everything is apart anyway. Tips on replacing rod/main bearings such as torque #s and order of things?

I only have an e30/e36 bentley manuals, I need to pick up an e34 (535i) manual I guess.
