Went on autopilot, did something very stupid and caused a problem.

This morning I was chasing down a ticking sound in my car and I added some LIQUI-MOLY hydraulic lifter additive to see if that would help. While doing so I ended up creating another problem. After I adding in the LIQUI-MOLY, I took the car out for a short drive (about 5-10 minutes) without realizing I forgot to put the oil cap back on. Got home and was greeted to find the valve cover and the immediate surroundings sprayed with oil, with some of it on the underside of the hood.

Cleaned the resulting mess and checked the oil. Luckily, I didn't lose much and the oil pressure light didn't come on. While cleaning the mess I noticed that some of the valve cover bolts were loose. Perhaps they rattled themselves off? I do recall the engine idling pretty rough after adding the LIQUI-MOLY additive before returning to normal a few seconds later.

    What should I do?

UPDATE 11-19-2021: Cleaned up the mess and put everything back into place. Car runs fine, but still didn't get rid of that annoying ticking noise.

Tighten the bolts without stripping the threads, reinstall the oil cap, you should be fine.

If it was running rough while the oil cap was off, then that is to be expected since it effectively is a big vacuum leak lol.

Clean up the mess, see if you can tighten the valve cover bolts, helicoil them if needed, and don't worry about it.
