    M42 alternator

Hello, I hope to find a answer to my question. My alternator just died on my e30 m42 318i. I’m found one that’s 90 amps but unfortunately they are out of stock in my local parts stores. Then I found a 105amp alternator for a e36. Is the alternator for the e36 m42 a direct fit for the e30 m42?
This is daily so I am hoping to pick one up instead of waiting for shipping.
Here’s the part number for the e36 alternator I’m looking to buy: R110803A

Hmm, can you cross check part numbers on major part supplier websites?

My guess is that it should be the same but I don't know for sure. One option is to carry in your old one and check it side by side for the big dimensions and the electrical plug.

I just checked and Oreilly's says it won't fit an M42 '91 318is. So - must be different.

I think the bolt spacing is very similar, but the spacing where the bracket goes may be somewhat smaller on the E36 M42/44 unit. Only way to be sure is to measure the two.

Otherwise, ebay will have alts if the locals don't.

I thought the e36 has serpentine belt pulley. Is that true?

Most models have pulleys that can be swapped, albeit some will need a small spacer or a different washer. But the E36s with M42s will almost certainly be v belt. Many years ago I was working on a serpentine belt conversion for an E30/M42 and I was able to simply install an E36 serp pulley IIRC.
