this was the noise my car was making when cold
or sometimes out of nowhere i could hear the noise it was a tickling
then it turned into a rattle...so i finally decided to do something about it
i started by changing the chain tensioner piston....and wallah no more noise the engine doesnt tick or rattle in the morning :D the 50 dollars i spent on the tensioner was well worth it....

the timing tensioner is a easy 5 min job.

as for my start up issue, i believe it has to do with my worn out timing sprockets. I'm not going to fix it to be honest. It will be easier just to swap in a nvm50, which is what im doing.

I doubt it's the gears. I think one of your lifters I toast. I bet with a stethescope, you could narrow it down, too.

And the sprockets are pretty easy to change. Just an afternoon job.
