    M42 motor performance

Posting for a friend who has a clean 91 318 with the M42.

What is the best way to get some good power out of the motor?

Would a turbo kits be a good idea and what are you guys running?

    Thanks,

    Tyler

DASC Super charger not the most power but the easiest most reliable way to get approx 200hp.

Very happy with mine with software & a M20 lightened fly. Feels like a 6 cylinder off the line, but gets awesome gas mileage.

Will say though when the time comes to do engine work, I'll port & polish the head, and put in a hot cam.

This. Intake and exhaust aren't worth the effort IMO. The stock parts flow just fine.

intake with a high beam delete costs about 60$, and makes a diffrence. as for exhaust, i made quite an improvement when i removed my cat. that cost maybe 100$?

worth doing if you like the howl of a m42 at 6500-7100rpms.

clutch is on my list when current "stock" one goes,

however my "parts car" is a 91 318is, and it does not have limeted slip, whish it did, that was part of the reason I bought it

magnaflow exsaust on a 2.5 inch cat back, cop kit adn 4 pintel injectors , delete p/s and a/c adn all the throttle body heater crap, elec fan ( no fan clutch etc) helps too ( at least thats what I tell myself,) Ive read debates on those deletes and cop kits true "values". I just know, I dont need a/c with a vert wher eI live, the p/s was bad anyway and I dont miss it, the plug wires were shot and a suspected bad coil, the fan was cracked, and we all know the throttle body heater nightmares are worth getting rid of

A good idea would be to take out the stock flywheel and put in an aftermarket one or one from an M20. I felt quite a bit of difference in mates 318is, helped acceleration a lot in first 2 gears and w/ engine braking

Flywheel weight really is a big deal with an M42. I'm using a lightened stock M20 flywheel behind mine right now (about 14#) but have a 7.5# unit sitting on a shelf awaiting install. Even the 14 pounder is half the weight of a stock dual-mass. Tons of fun, I love wringing this thing out.

does the flywheel mod limit top speed? who makes a turbo kiy for the m42?
