Will say though when the time comes to do engine work, I'll port & polish the head, and put in a hot cam.
What about a port & polish by itself

Port and polishing an m42 without substantial mods (forced induction) will mostly likely not gain anything, possibly even hurt performance. Bigger is not always better, too large and you'll kill velocity.

I do think there is room in the intake manifold for better flow without making the ports larger really. The lower intake manifold necks down much smaller than the intake ports itself and should be matched to flow the best it can as-designed. Also where the lower meets the upper, mine had around a 4-5mm shelf on the inner radius that needed smoothing out. Might not feel those improvements on a street engine until the very top but I call it "free" HP since I can do it myself. An intake cam seems to help also from what I've read, its on my short list as well.
You say "Where are your other two cylinders?"
I say "Where's your other camshaft?"
            Frankenmotor: if an M42, M44, M20, S50, and S52 were to have a kid.
