why is my m42 still over heating?

im starting to lean toward heater valve but haveno idea where it is

Run the engine with the heater on until it's warm, then drain all the coolant. Now measure out EXACTLY 7 qts. 50/50 mix into a container. Now restart the car (with the heat still on) and begin refilling the rad. reservoir out of the 7 qt. container. At first it will be easy to fill, but as you've put more and more coolant in, the reservoir won't gulp coolant as rapidly. At this point, begin repeatedly squeezing the upper radiator hose until bubbles gurgle up into the reservoir, making more room for coolant. Repeat this process until all 7 qts. have been added. Now shut the car off and go inside and have a beer and wait for the car to completely cool down. Go back out and check the level in the reservoir. It should be a hair above the "Cold" line. If it's way above, you've still got air in the system. I've used this method successfully several times.

Although, you could also have a simultaneously faulty inst. panel ground and broken heater valve.

heres where im at now i spent all day messing with the cooling, i re drained and bled the system three times still no heat still going to the 3/4 mark
im about to replace the water pump do an electric fan mod and see if that helps. if some one cant help me, im really at a loss here its not like this is my first ball game ive been working on e36's and other bmw's for over 3 years

i bled the system again this morning still no heat
im thinking the stat i bought is defective as was the belt i bought from the same napa.....
this POS also has wiring problem like no ones business wiring is just all over the place check the cluster could the damn thing completely out but dont suspect faulty ground because THE GOD DAMN HEAT IS NOT WORKING so im really pissed off and am getting to be f**king broke,\

any input any at all why my heat is not working it is not leaking coolant and can sit at idle for over 2 hours with out going past the 1/4 mark drive it around the block and it heats right up and then some

Sounds dumb but did you turn your heater on when you refilled the car? If you drain the fluid and don't put the heater on when you refill it, your gauge will be all crazy and your heater wont work I did it by accident once.

i got lots of jugs of coolant, im going to try and mess with it in the morning not sure what im going to do if it is still not working, i got a extra m52 lying around and some spare turbo parts, but i bought this car for better gas milage
i really feel that once the heat works itll be fine

i just really feel that the lack of heat is related to the over heating i no its getting hot i saw a bit of steam coming from the cap but hard to tell if it was old or not

A couple years ago I bought a 318is; it needed a waterpump - was leaking. I changed it and had the exact same problem. You may have to drive it around and let it creep up then turn the motor off; let the pressure move the air to the top of the system and open the bleeder screw. See if steam or air comes out. I know you bled it a few times etc. but trust me; I strongly believe you still have air. I literally had the car run on the highway and my temp began go high. I shut it off and on the road bled it. I did this a few times until the temp stabilized. Good chance the reason you got NO HEAT in the cabin is because you still have air trapped in the system. remember to put the heat on defrost and full while you are running the car.
You may also have to create pressure in the system buy getting the engine's rev's up to force air out while bleeding. that's all folks!!!

People give pretty much every solution to fixing an overheating m42.
