    Oil Pump Pickup

I'm starting on building a new oil pan for my MGB project and have a question. The stock pan has the pickup built into the upper pan and has a slot/gallery to cover two holes in the block as seen here:

Here is basically where the "slot" covers on the block.

The round hole looks to go to the oil pump while the more square shaped one looks like it is a drain from the timing cover.

My question is, do I need to encase both of these like the stock pan does, or can I make the pickup only over the round oil pump hole?

Damn – I wanna help – but don’t want to give you bad info..

For things like this – I usually think in terms of “keeping it like the factory designed it”.
    i.e. encase both.

I know the round thing behind retainer clip is the oil pressure relief valve – and if it’s in an open housing along with the square-ish hole – it leads me to believe that its design/operation is dependant on that set up.

At first I was thinking it would be difficult to encase both, but I've been working on the pan design tonight and it looks like it shouldn't be a problem. I'm with you on the "keep it factory" part. I'd rather not loose oil pressure due to something stupid like this.

        Exactly.
Really looking forward to seeing how you overcome some of the challenges you'll face.

Thanks again for those stickers from a while back - btw..
        <3 them.

okay. the round hole with the e clip is the pressure relief valve. the square hole is the actual pickup
