I was doing 20-25 mpg with 4.10 diff and since I changed to a 3.73 lsd I get 40-45. I don't know why and don't really care xD. My old diff was squealing though I think it was burnt.

            Krikies !
40-45 is some spankin mpg for an m42. Wow. (you talkin kpg?)(kpl?)

Shit - seems like i've read 3.73 diffs on m42 cars resulted in only marginal/negligible differences in fuel consumption – and even then, only detectable with distance/highway driving.

A ~20 mpg decrease in consumption from a diff swap is quite remarkable. Jesus.

Best of luck getting your M42 running right. These cars can get very good MPG's when maintained correctly.

I drove up from LA to SF last weekend. I average 33mpg's on a stock 318is with an intake. I would imagen once I get the car sitting lower (not cutting through the air like a 4x4) and lighten it a little I could get 35mpgs. Hopefully an exhaust will free up a little mileage also. Not sure if the intake helped MPG's or not (I would hope so, but I didn't test it before install) but it definitely helped a little power wise. I had to shift back and forth between 4th and 5th pulling the first stretch of the grapevine on i5 on my trip a few weeks ago without the intake. With the intake on I was able to pull the entire stretch of the grapevine in 5th gear. I was pretty surprised.

I know! I was happy to realize I can last two weeks now before gassing.. But I usually gas every 100k just because it seems like you spend less.

this is the kind of miles I would love to be getting.. I will have to get a hold of a 3.75 small case diff. Going to install the "newer afm with cone filter. Hows the coil on plug?? I had some in my old car and i really didn't see the difference beside lasting a very long time..

I need to drive like an idiot to only get 200 miles. City driving does take more gas though so it depends on you guys habits.

You're running REALLY lean if you're getting 40+ MPG. Something is wrong with your mixture, math, or odometer.

So you've replaced the O2 sensor.
                              What about the injectors?
                              How's your temp gauge look?

The M42 was rated 19mpg city by the EPA btw.
