HELP - White Smoke out of exhaust pipe

(I've searched but I just want to be sure)

So when I rev it when it's a bit cold, i get a decent amount of white smoke come out of the tailpipe. I've heard this could be because of the oil used, and I haven't switched it since I bought it, this could be a probable cause of this. Could it also be because it hasn't reached proper temperature? Or it could be something larger like a blown headgasket. I've never experienced a blown headgasket before so please bear with me.

I'll make a video if necessary. Thanks.

White smoke is usually antifreeze. A compression test would be the next thing I would do.

That makes sense, after flushing my radiator I found some anti freeze in my garage for the time being and forgot about it. Should I use prestone or something else? The coolant/antifreeze in it now is some generic blend that came distilled 50/50. Hopefully no damage ensues.

when cold it happens to some high mileage m42s. mine did this all the time when cold.
After it warmed up the smoke went away. Your hg is probably ok, i wouldnt worry about it

Mine's at about 150k, I need to get another M42 block to turbo because this one has a million little finicky issues. Can't wait to get the money flowing again because stock M42 power isn't cutting it for me. You ever dyno your car?

how long does it smoke for? if it goes away after the car is warmed up then its just condensation. u should only worry if the smoke continues after it has warmed up.

After it has warmed up, there is considerably less smoke. Could just be condensation, and that's what I'm really hoping for. I don't have the garage space or tools for a headgasket job.

It made bout 250ish before the clutch smoked on the dyno... at like 14 lbs boost. Your smoke issue isn't a blown head. There's no way. I'd just drive it. My old m42 Used to smoke a bit on startup too.

Hey guys, decided to bring this thread back up since I'm having similar issues with my M42. Seems that I get a semi rough start when the car is cold with a decent amount of white smoke. After I drive the car for about 5-10 min it seems that the amount of white smoke decreases but its still there. The last time I started her up was inside my garage and in the exhaust fumes I could smell a bit of coolant(I know not safe). Just trying to figure out what my options are don't really have the spare time to do a Head gasket job. Thanks

check spark plug to see is it wet, most likely you have a blown head gasket.

Yeah thats what I was actually thinking about doing after i'm off work tonight. That might be the answer to the rough start, but need to figuere out if the head gasket is on its way out. If it I wonder is there is any product that can extend the life of the gasket or a fix that doesnt involve changing the head gasket. Only reason I would need something like this is because I dont have the time right now to work on the car.

Well there is some stuff like that but I would not recommend it. If you used it and then eventually got around to replacing the HG you would probably need to rebuild the whole engine just to get all the shit out of it not to mention replacing the radiator and what not.

HG is not to hard and you don't need alot of space especially if you have done some before DJ Buttchug did one in a day LOL. Check his build thread.
