mess under the intake?

what is this? i have the m42 engine.
i've searched and i can't really seem to figure out what this is any more than just a mess of vacuum lines. why would i want to delete these? what are the pros, and why don't i need them?
also is there a diy about this?

they are coolant lines. the system was created so the m42 would pass smog in the US. it is a mess of hoses that channels coolant to a heater plate behind the throttle body. it is pretty much useless.

benefits consist of cleaner simpler coolant system amongst other things

There are vacuum/icv lines under there as well, and if they haven't been replaced chances are they need to be.

As others have said, "the mess under the intake" is an absolute cluster-f of vacuum lines and coolant hoses that get brittle and crack over time. There are some completely unnecessary lines that can be deleted with no ill effects.

Yep - about a 1/3 of the stock hoses just aren't needed.
Wish I woulda counted up all the connections/junctions - but I think one can eliminate about 6-10 of them.

so is this under the intake manifold or the airbox? i assume the manifold because i've had the airbox out and i havent seen anything crazy.
i don't really understand the reason in doing this other than cleaning up an area of the engine you'll never really see.

yes,I too have done this. use 5/8 heater hose.
