    M42 Pilot Bearing

The M42 does use a pilot bearing, right?

I'm getting to the end of my rebuild, and for the life of me I cannot recall a pilot bearing falling out when I pulled the crank out, and there's nothing inside the flywheel. I would have known if my car was running without a pilot bearing, right? It's kind of necessary, yeah? I hope to God I don't have to tack on another week to this waiting for a bearing to come in the mail.

Complete writeup of rebuilding the M42 is in the works, for those interested.

Also, how bad of an idea is it to not use a torque wrench when putting everything back together, and guesstimating torque values? This may be a moot question, but has anyone had disasterous results?

yes a pilot bushing is used and no it probably didnt fall out of the crank. To best answer your question you do need one... and no. guessing torque values isn't a good idea, especially on things that spin very fast, like flywheels...

Get a harbor freight torque wrench at least. On the M42 we are in the middle of building, the pilot bearing DID fall out when we pulled the clutch off the flywheel.

My clutch kit came with a pilot bearing, not a bushing. Are you really getting to the end of an engine rebuild without a torque wrench??

Well, there's my answer. Going to HF tomorrow and checking the torque values of the crankshaft.

Well I checked the values of the bolts today, look like they're all torqued to around 30 Nm, which is 50% more than the 20nm the torque manual specifies. What's the consensus? Do you think the bolts could be compromised?

Which bolts exactly are you talking about? The ones that hold the flywheel to the crank?

If so, it shouldn't be a problem. You are only talking 7 ft lbs extra, which is not much. It's more important that they are tightened equally and not too loose. I would loosen them all back up and re-torque them correctly.

Always do your tq #'s correctly or you will regret it when rdore comes into play.

I was talking about the rod bolts to be more specific.

yes 100% rod bolts need to be torqued correctly. If i were you i would just back them off and re-torque them. 7ft/lbs isnt going to strech the bolts any. I take it you still have the engine out of the car? Or havent run it yet?

This is what happens when flywheel bolts come loose.

IDK how you think it is ok to estimate torques on an engine rebuild.
