Dual valve springs help ensure that the valve and lifter can follow an aggressive cam lobe at high RPMs. Maybe BMW realized that they over engineered the valve train and made changes with the e36 engines accordingly, or maybe they were just cutting corners to increase profits as they did with the m44, idk.

i had just overhauled my M42 and she fired up today. head had a crack and luckily I found a replacement with the same casting #. she ran really good while I was parked. unfortunately, when i took her for a test drive, it stalled after a mile. I thought I ran out of gas or the battery was too weak. It turns out the camshaft broke in half. All that hardwork... anyways, I'm waiting on another camshaft (exhaust side) then button her up again.
It took me awhile to get the car running. I cranked several times it until it started.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

I couldn't tell you about 4cyl motors for sure, but on the sixes BMW went back to single valve springs. I pulled an m50nv head to use as a replacement for my s52 and it had the larger stemed valves and dual springs where the s52 had the smaller stemed valves and single springs. I would consider it a small upgrade if I were you. Another note is that Metric Mechanic uses single valve springs in their performance heads, so I think it's more about which spring you use than single vs double.

I already got all of the valve and spring stuff figured out, the proble is that when I put the head together the first cylinder valves were sticking out a little although the rockers were pointing up, same most other valves, this would make the cylinder not fire cuz it doesnt have compression, my question is, do I have to just keep cranking it them to adjust or what?sigpic

I believe your camshaft is not on tdc. The first one is not supposed to point up, the tip should point to 10 o clock (intake) and the exhaust camshaft point to 2 o clock. So basically, exhaust and intake camshaft are almost facing each other. This is when the valves are raised up. And it doesn't hit the piston.

No my timing is correct, I just meant that the cam was at the position where the valves should be completely closed, you know what I mean?sigpic

i had to buy new valves for the new head i got because the old valves were too long for the springs on the new one. despite the same casting no. it had different springs and valve sizes. only a machine shop can tell you that if you are not knowledgeable in how that works.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.
