Picture of M42 cams- Is this right??

The car wont start and i was wondering if it is because of the cams being off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Has the car perviously run? The timing has been advanced, but both intake and exhaust has.

Try placing the engine at TDC then see where the cams sit, you can lock the engine at TDC buy using the fly wheel there is a little hole in the block just above the starter motor, put a screwdriver in there turn the engine till the screw driver locks into the fly wheel then you are at TDC.

Then if the square faces at the end of the cams are flat and the dot in prints are pointing up it should all be good.

Yes it has previously run. I let it sit outside for about a week during a snow storm and now it wont start. The only reason the valve cover is off is to replace the gaskets from leaking oil. It looked off to me from this position but i dont know much about the m42.

How should i go about getting it to TDC? i can barely budge it with my hands.

Here is a link to my not starting thread if youd like to give me some advise :)

When the engine is at TDC #1 compression stroke the cam lobes should look like this. Your timing set is shot by the way.

I am literally in the middle of replacing all that timing set in my M42. Gonna wrap her up tomorrow.

          Pretty fun job, actually.

Alright I think I got it. My timing is probably pretty close that picture. And I was just starting to notice that the sprockets are pretty pointed. Is that what you mean by the timing set? What should I replace? Both those sprocket things? Do I need to do the chain as well?

Sorry for all the questions haha

Good thing I bought this car for dirt cheap. I have a Daily driver BMW

I was a lucky bastard and found a dude selling it all new and at a somewhat discounted price.

Search the classifieds here, and I believe you can find another set that hit the classifieds right after I bought mine.

I also shopped around some and found Pelican to be fairly competitive.

Are you a BMW CCA member with access to a dealership that offers you the 10% CCA discount?

I actually got a damn good quote on the prices from the dealer.

                Believe it or not.

You are definitely in need of new cam gears, chain, and an updated tensioner piston and could probably also use new guides.

I will definitely take your word on that. I'm not about to pay base price for parts. I bought this e30 for $250

And I'm not a BMW CCA member, I probably should be though

I doubt anything happened to the timing without you knowing about it. I'd check the basics. Maybe some snow melted down the cowl where it shouldn't have.

                        PMed about parts sourcing.

I did not do that dremel work haha. I guess I'm 3 rivets off on the chain... if the marking on the left cam gear is right.

Is there a way for me to adjust the chain over without removing the front timing chain cover? By removing the tensioner or something?
