I was dropped on FK 60/40's with Bilstein Sports which brought my skid plate 2 inches off the ground. I broke an oil pan through the skid plate (unknown concrete object obliterated my plate and pan), and have since raised my car back up to stock. Personally, it's not very fun to daily drive a car that is 2 inches off the ground. If it were my weekend car, it would be an inch off the ground. ;)

It's because you have the wrong skid plate;)

Peerless Skid Plate is much stronger, and I believe sits a bit higher?

is it plug and play or does it require welding???

                  I believe it requires welding:

The e30motorwerks one does require welding. Speaking of which, I need to weld mine on at some point!

yeah, it's my test plate in 14ga stainless, still in the works, that pic is just a test-fit. Will eventually built one in 10ga with more substantial backing, but this will do for the moment. The car is for rallycross, on tall springs and minue 300lbs of weight, hence why it sits so tall (intentionally).

The one in the pic above I just built yesterday with garage tools and scrap material. Once the fit and cuts are perfected, I'll have a thicker piece laser-cut and press-bent.

(also, it's on an M10 318i - I just posted it here because I was browsing and thought it was funny I had the same picture angles as the guy above with the low car)

link in my sig has my build thread, with more pics of the skid, etc...in case you're interested.

If you break a pan through a Race Skids plate you motor mounts should have been replaced. The hydraulic ones sag over time giving hardly any flex room.

                              agree
when I first put my plate on I had near a 1/2 inch between the oil pan and the skid plate
after about a year or two I noticed ( last month while doing an timing chain replace) that my oil pan was on my skid plate, it was not that the skid plate had bent up, its my mounts had dropped down
