Any ideas on how to remove Crankshaft Bolt?

    Any ideas on how to remove Crankshaft Bolt?

    I'm trying to remove this for my timing chain replacement and was wondering if there are any ways to do this without the BMW specialty tool.

    Bently says you need to keep the crankshaft at TDC while taking off the bolt. Is that really necessary? Couldn't I just adjust it after the bolts off?

    It's the 22mm bolt that has ~260 ft/lbs torque on it

      and yes you can set the timing after you get bolt loose as your chances are its gonna move some anyway, so why be anal about that step now

      of course when bolt is loose, put in neautral, and maybe even pull plugs out, so you can turn engine easy by hand to line it up

      I have read where people have to put the socket on a long breaker bar brace against frame and tap starter and let the engine do the work.
      Ive only had to remove 3 in my years, two came off easy then expected, one was with a air gun

        I fought with this last weekend, my clutch was slipping in 5th gear with my buddy standing on the brakes. We ended up having to rent a gas powered compressor, even with that we couldn't get it to break, so we ended up using map gas to heat it up for about 10 minutes and then the thing just zipped off. Good Luck...

          Here's how we did it a couple weeks ago (with flywheel and cam locks in place).

          Pull out the biggest air gun you've got. A big horkin' snap-on is what we used.

          Crank open the regulator on your big-azz airtank ... several turns more than normal.

          Fill the air gun with a fresh shot of tool oil.

          Make sure the gun is set to remove the bolt (so you don't accidentally tighten it further).

          Voila.

          We had the BMW crank hub tool but didn't bother with it. :mrgreen:

          I don't own any of this, I'm just lucky enough to have a pal with a shop and every damn tool you could want.

            Thank you everyone for the ideas. I decided not to hassle with it to much and I went straight to using the starter, breaker bar, and a block of wood.

            It came off the first try :D

                  This is one of the things that the cheap-azz Harbor Freight 3/4" drive metric set is good for.

                  I made a 4' long bar that bolts to the front hub, put a 4' bar on the HF breaker bar, and squoze. Worked great.

                    I went ahead and bought the crank holding bar. After rebuilding 5 engines it has been well worth the price. To take the bolt off i take the handle off my floor jack and stick it on my breaker bar. At 5 or so feet long it comes off pretty easily.

                      there is a small hole in the in the block towords the flywheel right above the oil pan its kinda hard to see it, when you are at tds stick a screw driver in there wigle it around and turn the engine a little bit and the screw driver should pop in a hole in the flywheel and you are set to go just make sure the screw driver doesnt popback out. really easy to do ive done it everytime
