e30 m42 idles up and down then dies

After running for a little bit, my '91 318iS's idle will rise and drop and eventually cut off. After it cuts off it won't start for about 1-2 minutes, it has also started cutting off even while I'm driving. I replaced the fuel filter last night and also replaced the idle air control about a year ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you install the lines backwards?

Of what? The fuel pump? I replaced the fuel pump thinking it'd stop the idle problem.

crank sensor. also vacuum leak possibly or ICV problems causing the idle to hunt

Mine did that when the ICV crapped out, could be the crank sensor or even the MAF going out too. Disconnect your ICV and drive it around for a min and see if that makes a difference. Do the same with your MAF.
