    M42 coolant

Does the M42 need a special type of coolant? or can I just use the all makes/all models stuff?

    Thanks!

No you need to get the proper coolant or you will develop 'green goo'... Search the forum for the correct type. I personally use BMW coolant only.

BMW coolant in mine as well. The PO put in standard green and it created a lot of buildup of crap in my cooling system

Plain green has worked just fine in mine for the last 3 years...

...it's mixing the types that generates the goo.

I've been using the blue BMW stuff.

Anyone have any experience using water wetter/distilled water mix? I've run that in almost every car I've owned...but never heard anything as far as using it in the M42's

WW and distilled water should be just fine, we run it in the Chump Car and I run it in my daily in warm weather.

Question for you fellas, I just replaced a the water pump and thermostat along with lots of other things now I am wondering if I should run the car with distilled water first then add after a couple miles drain it and add the BMW coolant I bought for it. Should I be fine? or should I not add the distilled water?

Distilled water and regular Prestone green have been fine for me for the 13 years that I have owned M42's. No corrosion or green go. There is nothing exotic about the M42 that calls for fancy coolant.

                          This literally made me LOL!!

I need to flush mine, the coolant has been in there since I got the car two years ago. Looks like I'll be going the water wetter route...it gets too damn hot in the south!

^good question. is there anything wrong with running it for a few minutes with water in order to flush it out??

also does anybody know how much coolant it takes?

That's usually what I do to flush coolant on any other car I've owned. Never had an issue.

From what I read, the M42's hold just under 2 gallons of coolant minus the overflow. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
