its normal in higher mileage m42s. change to a higher viscosity oil to quite it down
edit: If car sat for a long time 100% LIFTERS.
Drive it around and get the oil pressure up. above 3k rev. it will stop

I've always run 10w40 in my m42 but to keep the lifters quiet on my m50 I run 20w50. Works pretty well.91 318is M50 swapped

Switching to a thicker viscosity oil didn't help, even when it started to get cold up here.

i have had the same noise since i got the car.
I ran the oil flush and used fully syn 0W40. Drove it on the open road for a few hours doing 120-130km\h and when i got back home the noise was gone
But then i left it for a few days and when i started it the noise was back for a few seconds
I guess they need to be replaced

When I got into E30's I was surprised the valvetrain didn't utilize "set once" hydraulic lifters. But a collapsed lifter sucks just the same.Last edited by Quadrajet; 06-24-2013, 01:01 AM.
