Not similar to lifter... it is lifters.
its normal in higher mileage m42s. change to a higher viscosity oil to quite it down
edit: If car sat for a long time 100% LIFTERS.
Drive it around and get the oil pressure up. above 3k rev. it will stop

I've always run 10w40 in my m42 but to keep the lifters quiet on my m50 I run 20w50. Works pretty well.91 318is M50 swapped

thats because these style require adjustment and are not self adjusting like the m42 ones.

i have had the same noise since i got the car.
I ran the oil flush and used fully syn 0W40. Drove it on the open road for a few hours doing 120-130km\h and when i got back home the noise was gone
But then i left it for a few days and when i started it the noise was back for a few seconds
I guess they need to be replacedComment

Actually they were manually adjusted only on the High Perf models in the 50s 60s early 70s -labeled mechanical cams, many 300-350hp motors had hydraulic adjustable lifters-labeled Hydraulic cams. Once emissions started to get around it spelled the doom of the Mechanical cam in domestic cars.
When I got into E30's I was surprised the valvetrain didn't utilize "set once" hydraulic lifters. But a collapsed lifter sucks just the same.Last edited by Quadrajet; 06-24-2013, 12:01 AM.Comment
