    waterpump

installing a new waterpump. Is there anyway to prevent it from "sticking" when it comes time to replace it again? I was thinking of putting antiseize on the mating surface?

not a good idea, can damage the seal. just tap it out when its buggered again, small club hammer, few wacks either side of the part where the pulley bolts on and it will pop off. You cant damage the block, the pump housing will shatter long before that (which would only happen if you are beating the hell out of it)

THis is what I found. So I had to swap out the timing case. Obviously the po had a hard time getting the waterpump out.

This is not what I wanted to see as I'm about to pull mine.. How did you end up getting it out?

since I had a extra timing case ready to swap out, I pounded the waterpump with hammer. That thing felt like it was welded in there

Yeah- whakketta whakketta whakketta for me, too.
Back and forth seemed to work best- one side a bit, then the other.

If you were to use an anti- seize, find something that's rubber- compatible.
Most is petroleum- based, as ethrty noted, and will kill the seal...

I have used heavy silicone grease on my o-rings for years. It does not harm the rubber, makes stuff go together easier and helps to prevent things from getting stuck. In a pinch you can use silicone dielectric grease, but if you can find the really thick stuff that's even better. Wear gloves though, it is a chore to try to wash the stuff off of your hands since it is so good at resisting water & soap!

My dad made me a custom m42 water pump puller. I was trying to get my water pump out for four days. After he made it, it probably took us less than a min to pull it out. If anyone is interested let me know because we can make more of them. It saves to the struggle and wanting to blow up your car.

Struggle is half the fun, and I'm firmly convinced that we wouldn't appreciate our cars as much as we do if we didn't have some difficulties repairing them.

I agree! Ive only had my 318 for a little over a year. I didnt know much about cars before i bought it. Now im doing my head gasket and waiting on parts to put it back together. Its a great car and it just makes you love it that much more.

You could try soaking the front of the water pump with PB Blaster and letting it sit for a day or two before disassembling everything.

Generally, for yanking on the pump I find it best to remove the kidney grill and radiator so that I can get a straight shot at it. It would probably be relatively cheap and easy to find a way to thread some M6 bolts into the pump flange and attach a slide hammer somehow too. Luckily none of my pumps were ever that badly frozen and prying with a very large screwdriver between the back of the flange and the timing cover (with a small block of wood between the driver & cover) always worked.
