    Timing chain tensioner differences??

Today I changed my timing chain tensioner. It was really loud on cold start like the old tensioner had no control over the chain. The funny part was that it was much quieter when I held 1.5 for 30sec or so then went on my way. It sounded much better when warm but the cold start really sounded terrible like someone hammering the front of the block... I was surprised to find that the one that came out was nothing like either of the ones on the e30 zone wiki... As I pulled out the old one I thought it was strange that it didn't have any springy feeling like it was locked up from the oil inside. It literally felt solid until I drained the oil out of it. The new spring is quite a bit longer and the spring feels somewhat stronger. The new spring also begins pushing at least 1/2 inch further out in the travel.

I started it up and lo and behold, it was silent, no hammering noise from teh chain area... I haven't taken the 30 anywhere but it sounds like it might be fixed, sounds 100x better!

So M42 experts, what kind did I have?
Old is the one with oil nearby on the left, new I got a few weeks ago from Pelican...Note the longer end that goes into the cap and the holes in that part... I'm almost thinking it isn't for an m42 or m44 at all.

Very weird. maybe it is from an M6x series V8? I think those have a similar tensioner setup to the M42.

I don't know, I was looking at it more closely and the holes appear to be part of a pressure relief valve? Inside it looks like a ball and spring. In the end is a small cap with a snap ring...

http://www.meeknet.co.uk/e31/E31_Tim..._Tensioner.htmIn this link there are pics of an m60 tensioner and it looks to be what I had... Good eye!

So the next question is why would someone put an m60 tensioner in the m42???
