    Transmission Problems (1991 318is)

    Good Morning,
I have been having some difficulty shifting into gears. If I shift under 3,000 rpms, it shifts pretty smoothly. When I shift above that I have difficulty getting it into gear. I don’t really hear grinding. I can downshift without issue most of the time although 2nd does better when I rev match before dropping the gear down.

I flushed the transmission over the weekend and bled the clutch. It seem to help a little.

Any ideas on what i should troubleshoot next?

When you flushed the fluid, what type did you put in, how nasty was the old stuff and how much metal was stuck to the magnetic drain plug?

I dont recall what trans fluid my mechanic put in but it was quality stuff. The old fluid was in really bad shape. There was a good amount of metal shards on the magnetic plug.

I had this problem when my clutch came apart...
the straps on the pressure plate broke.
