Changing out thermostat.

My 318is is not warming up to operating temperatures, so I am going to start by replacing the thermostat. It looks like this is a pretty simple job, but I wanted to ask if there is anything I should know before I start the job. Is bleeding the system necessary, or can I just open it up and replace the thermostat?

you will have to bleed the system when you change the t-stat!

its pretty simple. there is a little bleed screw next to the radiator cap that you can open.

If your changing the thermostat, replace gaskets, O-rings, check the water pump, check accessory belts, hoses.

be carful with the cast thermostat housing, they crack easily, ask me how I know.

your temp guage might be off, so you might be getting up to operating temp but the guage says different.

Id check the guage first.

How do I test the gauge? It seems to be working correctly.

i dont think you can check if its off. you can check if it works, which it does cause its moving. you can check the sender to the gauge. it is under the intake manifold. there are two little sensors on the side of the head. the one for the gauge is the rearward one. pull it out and look for corrosion or rust. you could also check the resistance on it. i dont know the specs, but they are cheap so it could be good to replace it if you take it out.

Well I replaced the T-Stat, and I did have a little trouble with bleeding the coolant. I broke the bleeder screw and had to get another one from the dealer. Dont tighten those as tight as you think... Well it fixed the problem. The temp gauge hits dead center now, and I have the piece of mind that the coolant is new and a perfect PH level also. The previous owner of the car was a dip shit that really knew nothing about e30's so I am going around fixing all the od's and ends.

Now that I got the car up to the correct operating temp, I hope I will pass my emissions. Wish me luck!.
