But its a small turbo with not much boost. That setup would hold 25 psi easy. And with a bigger turbo would be in the 450whp range at 25psi and race gas.

The engine is way over built but it will never have an issue at those power levels.

I believe its TRM with the m42 race car? Making 340 to wheels with just forged pistons.

Super sick build though ben, thanks for sharing. I'd love to see some videos of it in action.

edit: Its rob_e30 on m42club that has the m42 race car. I'm not sure if thats his name on here but i know he posts on here

300hp can easily be had with just pistons. as stated above 25k is wayyy to much. Considering the cost of my turbo engine Ive only spent around 3k so far. My car isnt running yet due to small odds and ins im still sourcing but shit, With a standalone system and dyno time I can easily see 300 crank hp.

Very easily. It only takes about 15psi to reach those levels. The stock pistons could hold that for years of abuse if you shave them or fit a thicker head gasket.

I go back to the statement "To each their own" This guy wanted the best of the best for his build and could obviously afford to just pay for parts that would go together, and run. I'm sure with a few more headaches and slightly less reliability (although he did post about some sort of failure already) you could do similiar with a shoe string budget. If it were me, I wouldn't use an M42 at all...I've driven a total of about 25 miles and I'm already not a huge fan of this motor...

Oh I'm not bashing the guy for what he spent. Hes got a tank of a setup that he can beat on all day and actually have fun with the car without worry about something breaking.

Anc when you figure the cost of an STi, evo, corvette, etc. $25k + a $4k e30 is a great deal. It would stomp all over these cars and be just as or even more reliable.

dang...I've probly only got 3k in my car and I'm right around 190whp... then again, mine is all DIY haha. Looks like that car is all top-dollar stuff, so it looks a lot nicer than mine and has a lot more power...but a blown HG? Already? that surprises me, especially with lower boost levels like that.

Oh, and fwiw I think VAC motorsports also sells some turbo M42 bits, if I remember right.

yea but consider your build. your on stock internals. 200hp, thats pretty good as far as im concerned

I use M54B30 pistons in my M42 turbo build. They have about 3 mm lower compression height but a flat top so the comp.ratio ends up at around 8.5:1. This is the only internal mod I've done to my engine, besides fitting a M50 main bearing shell to get 360 deg. axial bearing. This is important to do otherwise there's a big risk of destroying it with a stronger pressure plate.

My engine is not overhauled, only some new gaskets. Before I turbo'ed it, it had about 210'000 km on it. I'm still running the same bearings and piston rings from the M54 engine :) I just wanted to try it before I put in some serious $ in it ;) I'm currently building a 2.0L with M47 crank and all forged internals. But it has been running flawlessly for over 3 years now, I have even raced it a couple of times on trackdays. But the key is not to cheap out on the EMS and proper tuning with wideband o2, EGT and knock detection.

Affordable is all relative. Based on my experience, I would recommend custom pistons, stock rods and crank, mild head work, custom ECU, and both intake and exhaust manifolds. Upgrade the raditaor and add an oil cooler for sure. Stock gaskets, custom clutch, Coil On Plug kit, lightened flywheel, and pay a LOT of attention to how the exhaust is plumbed.
