G260 Clutch Masters FX100 grinding noise upon engagement

Recently I helped a friend do an S50 swap into an 88' 325is using the original g260 transmission, and the clutch makes a grinding noise like a nail on a chalk board upon engagement when starting from a stop. The car has the stock M20 single mass flywheel (just machined down on the backside) paired with a Clutch Masters FX100 kit to help cope with the extra torque over a stock m20 clutch. The rest of the time it works fine, such as driving/shifting while moving or even driving aggressively, but engagement upon pulling away from a stop it will make the grind/screech noise (especially when giving extra revs) unless the clutch is carefully engaged without any throttle.

I checked with Clutch Masters and didn't get much help from their customer service. Is it the compound of the disc that would cause the noise? The pressure plate is just a beefed up version of the stock Sachs m20 parts, and the throwout bearing is a stock e30/e36 Sachs unit based on the part number, unless the throwout bearing isn't up the task? The break-in instructions were followed, pilot bearing is new, and clutch hydraulics have been bled to rule those out. As a side note, I had this same issue with my e30 with another example of this same kit, and eventually swapped in an e36 M3 clutch and DMF to get rid of the problem (but using a ZF320 instead).

As a backup option, does anyone know if the 240mm e36 m3 clutch and DMF fit inside a "1346"/325i g260? I saw in a StanceWorks video that they used an e36 M3 clutch in their g260 s52 swap, but wasn't sure if it only works with the deep eta bell housing version versus the 325i single mass version.

Well, a highly metallic friction material really can make some nasty noises, especially before it's bedded in-
have you tried intentionally slipping it a bit to get some heat into it? That will also help with bedding it.

Spent some time driving the car this weekend trying to see if could bed the clutch some more. The car has 2500 miles on the swap, so hopefully the clutch is broken in by now! I drove around San Francisco to do a bunch of hill starts, but was still running into the same issue. The car functions fine, just an annoying noise under certain circumstances. At this rate I think a stock OEM style clutch is what the car needs since they're quiet and work well. Does anyone know for a fact if the e36 240mm clutch & flywheel fits into an e30 g260 without clearance issues?

No. It should, because the extra friction material's on the inside, and the 240 and 228 are used interchangeably on the same transmissions, but I've never actually compared the two.

I'd try it, but I'm not particularly risk averse. I also love that gutteral swearing you can only do whilst trying to install a transmission for the third time... and it's binding on something.

did you put the clutch disc in the right way?

Don't ask me how I know this may be the cause of nasty noises.

I'm fairly certain I installed the disc correctly as they're generally labeled with the gearbox side and only wanted to install one way. Can the disc be installed backwards and still clear the flywheel bolts and operate normally?

I must admit my error was a ford fiesta clutch I did for my brother. With it around the wrong way the springs and hub of the clutch ground on the flywheel. the hub sticks out one side of tthe clutch plate, but is flush on the other side. The clutch did work as expected, but the noise was horrific. dunno just something for you to think about in the middle of the night, as its a pain in the ass to check haha.
