Last night my dad accidentally won an auction for a '85 318i auto. From the auction site I was able to grab and decode the VIN and both bimmer.work and mdecoder.com are showing 209 Limited Slip Differential (25%). The diff chart on E30 zone doesn't show a LSD as an option so I am confused and wondering if anybody else has encountered this.

Picked it up today and it's got a S4.10 tag on the diff, kind of a nice little surprise I guess, didn't expect that on a lowly 318i. Before making this thread I should have researched a little harder and checked realoem where I discovered the LSD option. If the LSD was never offered in the UK then it makes sense that the UK based e30zone wouldn't include it in their chart. Now I just wonder what differences it has from the S4.10 diff offered in the later m42 cars.

BMW did some weird things with small- case LSDs in the 80's and 90's- the E36ti's seem to have gotten them
surprisingly frequently in the US- maybe BMW thought 'ooo, we'll get the economy- minded sports car wanna- be's'
But on an automatic? That's... a new level of 'huh?'
There aren't a lot of heated options on it, are there? One of the later packages that could include a LSD was the 'cold weather' stuff...
