Auto > Manual Swap Clutch/Flywheel issue.

    I'm doing an automatic > 5spd conversion on my 1989 325i (M20 with a Getrag 260).

    I'm using this flywheel:
CNC Lightened Flywheel Fits BMW M20 engines. For BMW E12, E21, E28, E30, E38, Z1Dramatically improved engine response and acceleration.  The flywheel weight is properly distributed for maximum strength, good heat tolerance, and rigidity. This flywheel, which is CNC-milled from a single block of 4130 chrome-molybdenum a

    I'm using this clutch:

    These pressure plate bolts: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...16-07119919939

    And these flywheel bolts:

When I install the clutch and pressure plate to the flywheel, I'm not able to get it to seat flush. There is a gap between the pressure plate and flywheel at every bolt. If I remove the clutch disk and just put the pressure plate up to the flywheel without the clutch disk, it will seat flush.

I noticed that the bolts will not thread all the way through when the clutch disk isn't installed so while the pp is flush, the bolts still have a gap. I'm assuming this means the bolts I have are too long? Has anyone had this issue?

Yeah, looks like the holes don't go far enough in to pull the cover down.

That looks like the 'clutch masters' flywheel, with some extra milling...

The rule of thumb is that you want the fastener to engage at least 2/3 of its diameter-
so if that's an 8mm bolt, you want at least 6mm of threads engaged in the flywheel.
If you're getting that (me, I'd want at least 8mm) you could use a shorter fastener,
or you could look at drilling the holes through, and tapping the rest of the way.

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

definitely seems like your bolts are bottoming out. either get shorter bolts or grind them down to the size you need (being careful not to damage the threads)
