If you are going to daily drive it and do a lot of highways I would go with the 3.73. The 4.10 is fun to play around with but gas mileage suffers.

I have a 4.1 with a 5-speed and it is crazy forget about first gear altogether as it will be pretty much useless haha

i have a s3.91 but also have a m10 so highways isnt to bad, just getting around 23-25mpg doing 80ish mph 80mph = 4,000 rpms LOL, not sure with a m20 tho

IMO the 4.10 is perfect to wake up a stock 2.5 M20. It's not bad at all to drive on the street and the highway MPG difference isn't that much.

I agree with nando. After driving my '91 with a 4.10, my '89 with a 3.73 seems sluggish.

Well i don't drive too much on the highway. Proably twice i have a 30 mile round trip. And i do drive a good 800 mile roud trip to the beach every summer. But i guess i could deal with it for that uch driving.

i recently swapped my auto for a 5 speed and kept the 4.10. its great, sure 5th gear ends up being roughly 1:1 but i think the gains outweigh the drawbacks. at 60mph in 5th the engine is turning about 2500rpm ish.

                    Currently E30-less

                      I am going with a turbo so I didn't want to rock a 4.10 open so I put in a 3.73 LSD

Yeah but do you cruise at 60mph? I'd hate you if you were in front of me :p

Well over here on the autobahn the 4.10 sucks gas. But I topped out at 227kph about 141mph with my euro 325i. I just switched to a 3.73 LSD, I lost all that power but get better gas mileage. Haven't toped it out yet.

top it out, it would be interesting to see the diff in top speed. I bet it's not much!

I'd also kindof assume that fuel economy in an E30 would suck at 140mph no matter what gearing you had. :p
