      That said I'll work on getting the seized drain bolt out and drain & flush the tranny, refill with GL-4, and see what she does. I still suspect that being driven for who-knows-how-long with no gear oil at all in the case will have done more damage than a couple hundred miles of being driven with GL-5, but what do I know.

        How did the transmission get to the point of having no gear oil?
        Even if there was a leak at the pan gasket, wouldn't the pan still have some oil in it? From the looks of mine it seems you can't even get out all the oil using the drain bolt, since there would still be some sitting at the bottom of the pan.

        Do you guys know the ATF, Redline MTL, GL-4, GL-5, B&M Stickshift, and Lucas compare in viscosity? I'm looking for something a little thicker to prevent the inevitable leaks.

          Fix the leaks not the fluid...transmissions aren't as forgiving as engines when it comes to fluid viscosity.

          Probably leaking from the rear seals which aren't hard to replace.

            If I'm not mistaken, the problems with GL-5 Stamar is referring to are due to the fact that GL-5 has higher sulfur content so the anti-wear barrier it created is actually harded than the (brass) syncros, so when that barrier peels off, it brings some of the synchro material with it, causing damage. Granted a lot of this is information I've collected from the internet so reliability is questionable as always.

            I am also perplexed by where the gear oil actually went in the first place; where would a leak from the rear seal be visible, if anywhere?
