Noob question: what kind of 17mm hex wrench/bit are you guys using to remove the fill plug on transmission? I got a 17mm 1/2 drive but its so large once I got it on my rachet I cant get it in place. Couldnt find any 3/8 hex bits. Also is there a real difference between allen and hex? both look the same to me...

I use a short piece of 17mm hex that I cut from a allen wrench. Slip it into the drain plug and use a 17mm six-point box end wrench. If the plug hasn't been out recently you may need a cheater. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

You can also drop the trans brace and you'll be able to fit the ratchet.Comment

17mm hex socket with 17mm open end wrench worked for me when I didn't have the proper tool. I have since ordered the "VW" trans plug tool for $3.99 from Autozone. It's a short 3/8's to 17mm hex socket."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

I made a tool by welding a nut with a 17mm hex to a cheapy 3/8" drive socket. One of the many tools I've made instead of bought.Comment
