transmission fill plug help

Noob question: what kind of 17mm hex wrench/bit are you guys using to remove the fill plug on transmission? I got a 17mm 1/2 drive but its so large once I got it on my rachet I cant get it in place. Couldnt find any 3/8 hex bits. Also is there a real difference between allen and hex? both look the same to me...

just use a 17 end wrench if you can get it in t here and its not fun at all

I use a short piece of 17mm hex that I cut from a allen wrench. Slip it into the drain plug and use a 17mm six-point box end wrench. If the plug hasn't been out recently you may need a cheater.

I do similar to Jlevie. I have the 17mm hex bit from Vatozone, and like you its too long on the ratchet. Solution is to stick a long handled 17 box end on the hex bit and have at it. works a treat.

You can also drop the trans brace and you'll be able to fit the ratchet.

17mm hex socket with 17mm open end wrench worked for me when I didn't have the proper tool. I have since ordered the "VW" trans plug tool for $3.99 from Autozone. It's a short 3/8's to 17mm hex socket.

I'm using a 17mm allen tool with my jack handle for a breaker bar.

I made a tool by welding a nut with a 17mm hex to a cheapy 3/8" drive socket. One of the many tools I've made instead of bought.
