    How do I know....

I'm going to pull a tranny out of a pick and pull car tomorrow. Before I take it home, is there some way to tell if it is okay? Sitting in the car it shifts smoothly.

I plan on replacing the clutch, pressure plate and getting a 323i flywheel but want to make sure I get a good tranny.

    Thanks.

In the absence of obvious problems (noise while turning, inability to select a gear, etc) the only way to tell if a transmission is good is to install it and see if it has any problems.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

You CAN hook a drill to it and spin it and shift it while it's spinning.

That finds quite a few problems.

But no, the only definitive test is to run it under load.

Oh, draining the oil and looking at it and smelling it can
      also tell you a bit.

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves
