Has anyone tried modifying their shift lever?

Hey I'm just curious if anyone has tried to modify their stock shift lever. It seems like it would be pretty easy to just cut it and extend the lower arm for a shorter throw. Any reason why no one has done this? Unless the lower part of it is aluminum, that could make it pretty difficult.

Yeah, its been done for years until people realized it was easier to just get a short lever from another model for $50. They used to sell short throw adapters that effectively made the bottom of the lever longer for $89-100. then hack off a bit from the top....but that's when options were limited. Why do all that when u can do it right with a shorter lever from another bmw?

Well I already have an e30 shift lever and I have a welder. Also couldn't find a z3 shift lever for under 80 bucks.

I did it to mine just a few weeks ago. I added about 3/4" under the ball to shorten the throw and added an inch to the top to make it longer. Bent it back because I'm tall and have the seat all the way back. Also made a delrin bushing for the bottom. The stock bushing seems to be phenolic and will burn if you get it real hot.
