1. jack the car up and support it on jack stands and then let the car run in reverse to warm up the tranny. (give it some revs and make it whine) Cut it off when it gets good and warm
2. remove the front half of the drive shaft
3. remove the shift selector rod
4. Open the filler screw and stick your finger in it to feel for fluid. If you don't feel shit then open the drain and look for metal shavings.
5. if its dry or has nasty ass fluid, go buy some redline ATF and fill that sucker up.
6. Trun the car back on but make sure the output flange of the tranny is clear of obstruction. Let the tranny warm up again reving it and circulating the fluid around. This will lubricate the stuck reverse gear/sychro and hopefully allow you to knock it out of gear. Turn it off when it gets good and warm
7. take a hammer and give the selector bolt a good lesson or two and this should knock it out of reverse.
Reassemble and you should be good to drive around in all of your forward gears. I've had luck enough to use reverse again but if I were you I would never put the car in reverse till I got another tranny.
also, to get into gear with a bad synchro I would have to shut the car off and then put it in gear. start it back up and go.
***cliff notes, buy a new transmission and install it.
Quit being a bitch and fix the shit. Nobody is going to be able to mysteriously/remotely fix your stuck gear issue without knowing or seeing exactly whats happening. Unfortunately scotty hasn't revealed his tricks to telekinectics.
Either follow the write up, take a video of whats happening, or go pay a mechanic to rape you.

Ok but we need to know what is happening. Can you make a video? Is the shift linkage moving correctly?

Honestly, I know you're looking for an easier way to do thing, but in this case there is not. The shifter is a mechanical link to the inside of the transmission. Either the transmission is bust, or the linkage is bust. The easiest and fastest way to figure this out is if you look at the linkage while moving the shifter. The only other way is by tarot cards.Last edited by Earendil; 01-16-2013, 06:33 PM.

For the hundred time this thread... Have you gone under the car while someone has worked the shifter?
We're giving you answers and your not doing what you need to do in order to determine if it's a transmission issue or a shift linkage issue.

I HAD a clutch stop but I took it out when it got stuck in reverse thinking maybe that might have been the problem.
And dude that sucks. My car broke down about two miles from my house and for a second I was debating on driving it home in reverse.

It happened in front of my old house and I got tired driving full blocks in reverse to move it for street cleaning days. :P

sounds like the tranny/ synchro went out. Happened to my buddy and we ended up having to replace it

Well if you can't get someone to move the shifter while you go under the car to see if anything is moving/broken how are we supposed to help you?
