Is there any difference in axle shafts?

I recently found a guy who'd be willing to sell me a couple axle shafts for pretty cheap. I actually just finished rebuilding my own, but I'm thinking of buying them so I could clean/rebuild and sell them to help fund my own project. So I want to know if there's any differences between the years and models before I go for it, and also what people think I could sell them for. I'd basically be cleaning the inner joint in a parts cleaner, cleaning out the outer as best I could, repacking them with new grease, and reassembling them with new boots after I've closely inspected the joints and shafts for defects.

    AFAIK

Only iXes has specific axles, and that may or may not be in the rear. All e30s were equip with the same axles stock; while there may be differences in build quality year to year, the input shaft, hub shaft, spline count, spline width, length; essentially all critical components will be the same

Just make sure they are straight. Also that they are not bent.

Thanks, that clears things up. Any advice on pricing, or whether or not people would want them? I just figure since it's a pain in the ass to do yourself, people might be willing to pay for a finished axle.

I would charge between 1 and 500 dollars.

            IIRC

There was a member here selling reman'd axle shafts for $350 a pair with a $50 core refund. But he knew his business, was a mechanic for a while, and warrantied his stock

They are a pain, but many will do the job themselves; you'll always find a few who'd rather pay to have it done though

Enough to make a profit then. Thanks for the help.

Ya, I don't think I could justify charging that much as an amateur who couldn't offer a warranty. Do you think somewhere between 180-250 would be a fair price for a pair done under those circumstances if I photographed the process?

I can't give you your opinion

That is for you to decide what you feel comfortable charging for your services

Thanks for the help then guys. It's good to know that it could at least be worth trying. Didn't want to jump the gun and do it just to find out a refurbed axle isn't worth anything.

Non airbag axles aren't the same, the hubs are different.

ABS cars and 85 and earlier are different. I tried putting the beefier 325 axles on my 85 and they physically do not fit. The splined end is a different shape. The post 85 axles are more squared off where the ABS ring is while the earlier axles are rounded.
