Center Support Bearing or whole driveshaft?

    Hi there,

It's time for the CSB job. I'm kind of pondering getting a driveshaft from Portland drive shafts to just do it all at one time, since I'm not sure about the condition of the u-joints. I imagine they're probably ready to go, or will be within a few 1000 miles.

But then, I could cheap out and just do the CSB itself for now, and then pop in a new Pioneer Deh-p80rs deck and some rainbow separates for the daily commute.

Decisions, decisions..I would love any input!

Take out the driveshaft with the intention of replacing the CSB. Inspect the u-joints. If they are fine throw it in with the replaced CSB.

You should also consider replacing the guide bushing, and guibo while you are it, regardless of u-joint condition.

Far be it from me to question your lifestyle choices....

Pull the drive shaft and check it. Many go 250,000 just fine.
      Others die at 100,000.

If it's not crunchy or binding or excessively clicky,
      spend your money somewhere else.

As stated, you can assess the condition of the drive shaft once it is out of the car. But if the rubber mount of the CSB has failed, that will almost always be from binding u-joints in the drive shaft.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yeah, well I guess I could order a CSB and then if the u joints are bad go ahead and order the drive shaft and return the extra CSB. Maybe I'm answering my own question now because I want to do it all at one time. I've got a stock muffler I'm putting back on to get rid of the magnaflow that's on there now, so I was planning on combining the jobs anyway. Guess it makes sense to just do it right the first time, since that's what I've done up to this point for this car. I'm hearing a clicky whirring sound now that has to be either the diff or CSB because I recently did the rear wheel bearings. I'm strongly leaning towards CSB.

I like the sound of those rainbow silk tweeters (had some in one of my e39's) but if there are other suggestions for the $200'ish ballpark for some 6.5 separates I'm open to that too.

Damn I hate having to be responsible! ha

I agree with jlevie. With the work it takes to swap the driveshaft, I just get remanufactured ones ready to go. Don't want to deal with having to drop it again for bad u joints or another failed csb. At least this way, you know you're good for another 75k or however long they typically last.
