New Car no 4th gear

Hi new to forum and first post. I just bought a 87 325ic this weekend and it does not shift into 4th gear the shifter is sloppy like every e30 I've driven. Even with the slop it shifts into all other gears fine.

I had the same prob' w/ my old trans, I got very good at shifting from 3 to 5, and drove that way for years. ultimately, I bought a known used trans ($100) and replaced the old one.

The two transmissions I've taken apart with that problem both had badly worn shift
forks.

But they'd come from race cars.

any more info on the causes of this, and if there is a simple solution other than just swapping trans? thanks.

Not likely.

Time to swap the trans. Might as well rebuild the shift linkage while you're at it.
