Shift into Fifth Gear issues

I have a low mileage E30, and all the gears feel normal except the shift into fifth feels odd compared to other 5 speeds (including e36) that I have driven. Its not like the 2nd to 3rd shift, more of an up, side up movement instead of a diagonal movement. Is this normal? Would a z3 short shift kit fix the issue? I am using a zhp shift knob.

May want to check the shift rod and shift arm bushings.

There's your problem.
The ZHP shift knob is only for 6- speeds.
