getrag 260 housing cover

I have Getrag 260/5 from 88 M20 e30. Realoem list only one piece housing cover (cover and throwout bearing guide as one unit). My throwout bearing guide is bolted to the cover. Anyone has the part number? I can't find it anywhere...
Or does anyone know if e36 one will fit? Trying to save $200.....:rippedoff:

well....I ordered one to give it a shot. It looks like BMW changed that part sometime in 88 for some reason. Kind of sucks since throwout bearing guide should be replaced for new bearing install and new guide/cover assembly goes for $200 vs $20 for the guide only. Also, the downside of replacing the whole cover is the fact that input shaft bearing has to be re-shimmed.

Fingers crossed that BMW was cheap enough to redesign/manufacture new part for E36/E46 and went back to old E30 part. Looks like their diameter is the same (cars share the same TB)...the flange diameter/bolt circle is my only concern at this point
Will let you guys know once I find out.

On the other hand.....how many folks here are replacing new seals on Getrags and checking/replacing shim stacks?
I found lots of write ups but none of them have any word for replacing and/or measuring input shaft bearing shims, checking shaft's axial play and installing different snap ring to decrease the play.. My understanding is that the above is a solid contributor to the trans noise and one shim (closest to the bearing race) looks pretty worn.

I didnt touch the shims when I replaced that seal and mine is the one in your last pic. Why are you replacing this ?

A. guide and its coating is a wear item as the bearing slides on it dry.

per Sachs:
If the bearing points of the guide sleeve, the release fork, or the release shaft are worn, this compromises the clutch's ease of movement – the worst case scenario is a total clutch failure.

B. Guide on my transmission is worn and no longer round.

Throwout bearing guide is worn by the bearing. The shim is worn. I haven't had a chance to measure clearances yet (0 to 0.0035 in.) for both shaft's axial play and the bearing race to cover clearance.

It's worn. Bearing won't slide smoothly. Don't see a point it the rotating it, the bearing contacts it all around the surface.
I've noticed 90% ppl don't remove oil gallery plugs when machining block ....doesn't make their removal BS though....

I'll take a look at the 2 g260s I have sitting here. How much clearance is there between the guide and the inside of the TOB ?

I don't think it's the matter of clearance as much as making sure that TB had smooth surface to slide on. My above post regarding the clearance was for the shim stack behind the cover itself and the clearance for input shafts axial play (adjusted with locking clip of 3 different sizes).

I just checked both the spares I have here which both have the 4 bolt guide you have and while they both have shiny areas where clearly something slid on them, I would never contemplate changing either.

I can see how checking this on the bench might be a concern but I dont see how installed it would matter since all the pressure is on the PP fingers, fork & TOB whereas the guide is...well...just a guide.

Mine shows wear way past the coating, tube itself is worn out. I can see why Sachs specifies it as potential issue as uneven surface can make TB to bind while sliding. I just hope $20 will fix this.

I might have to take you up on that. BMW old design is no longer available. New design is $200 hence I'm trying $20 part in first pic from e36

That e36 piece sure looks the same as what you have. Curious to see how this works out.
