Oil out of the vent hose ?

    Hi,

    Using 5speed out of e34 5speed .

Trans shifts perfect, no grinding, bought it used from one of the local BMW recyclers for my swap. Filled it up per Bentley manual with Royal Purple Synchromax ...everything seemed to go well, except that I found some oil came out the top vent hose and made a mess in the trans tunnel, got a wet spot above the vent hose as I actually smelled trans fluid while driving. Put the car on the lift and found oil on top of the trans where the vent hose, and right above it.

So, reading about this it seems SPEC guys add a tube with a catch can or at the vert least a long enough with a small breather filter.

Question - has anyone else experienced this on a STREET car? My gearing is a bit short so I am wondering if me driving for about 10 miles @ 75-80 @ 4k rpm is what did this?

    Thanks

I've only had that happen when the vent was partially plugged-
I guess it must have built up pressure and sprayed out.

I wouldn't think 4k would be a problem- most BMW boxes are fine at the track with just
    the factory venting.

Fluid coming out the vent hole is typically a result of over filling, over driving or incorrect fluid.

Right, unfortunately it's got right fluid and at the right level per Bentley manual.

What does over driving mean ?

I've driven my m30 car hard all season long with scca and never had this issue , but it didn't have a zf trans so maybe these are a bit different about it ?

I'm sure you know to fill it to the fill opening :-)

I'm not bobtheoilguy but I'm fairly certain one of the specs on gear oils is anti-foaming. If you go by Bentley you would use a street rated oil that might not have the best properties for track use (this is what I meant by "over driving")so I would look at fluid alternatives just to eliminate this as a possible cause.

I used royal purple synchromax , and its not foaming or anything . The level is up to the fill opening bolt hole .

My trans doesn't have a cap on top of the vent metal pipe, perhaps that's the issue ?

That could be it, although the cap may be moremto keep crud out then for vent capacity.

The pipe's open? Well, there's your problem and your solution all in one!
Run a length of tubing up a foot or two into the engine bay. Then run it into a catch can,
put a little bitty fuel filter on it, just something to keep bugs from crawling into it
                and making a home.

If the cap's missing, I could see it leaking.

Ordered a factory metal breather, it looks like they've changed the design of them and they are no longer plastic caps. The breather is a basically a metal cap that is weighted and in resting position is closed, but under pressure can vent. Problem is I can't really get that thing on the trans w/o lowering the trans or engine as the area above the breather is very tight... I don't really want to drill/cut into the trans tunnel from inside the car.

So, for now I've fitted a 90 degree plastic elbow in there with a foot long hose...so far no leaking. Will see if it stays and then just run a longer hose with a small filter on top.
