    yup....I was gonna get a 3.73lsd for $35 and it didn't work out lol

      Huh? All 6 cylinder e30s and e36s (except euro M3) have the same diff *size* (different case, same LSD will fit, except e36 M3)

        ot, but can you put limited slip clutches in a non lsd case? like is there the provision for it?

          You have to swap the whole differential. The inner part. The cases are the same.

            Huh, I was looking at these tonight on the bay... Then I run across this thread.

            Well if no one buys one anytime soon, I'd be up for the job, but that won't be for another 2 months or so.

              OBX Is local to me. i have been to their shop a few times as my buddy buys wholesale from them. maybe i will hitch a ride with him next time and pick their brains about these units.

                  Do it. I asked a buddy of mine who is heavily into drag racing and said some guys do run them in fwd imports w/o trouble but couldn't get any more info... lame.

                    i'm ready and willing to experiment with this but I have a few hurdles,

                    1 - i have a 92 318ic and thus have the 4.27 open diff... i'm not sure they make one that works...

                    2 - if they do make something (or i somehow get my hands on a medium case 4.1 diff)... i would need someone with the proper tools to install it into the diff (i can install the actual diff itself into the car)

                    and then i can report back my findings... and trust me... i'll try and break it

                          From what I've read, the key tool to service diffs is a bearing drag measurement tool. You have to tighten the pinion nut until the torque needed to spin the input shaft at 30rpm matches the specified value. That's not a tool that you'll find at your local store.
                          About the only way I can think of quickly making one is combining a battery screwdriver/drill set to 30rpm with a beam-type torque wrench.

                          You'll also need a complete set of shims for both the pinion position and the output flanges. The BMW list price on a "set" isn't cheap, especially if you'll need several sets for each diff.

                              All you need to measure pinion drag is a fine 0-20in/lbs torque wrench.

                              We always measure rear ends and order the proper shims here at work. I don't think a whole set is needed in stock to setup a diff.

                              I believe he's talking about servicing an LSD unit, not the entire diff itself.
