i'm ready and willing to experiment with this but I have a few hurdles,
1 - i have a 92 318ic and thus have the 4.27 open diff... i'm not sure they make one that works...
2 - if they do make something (or i somehow get my hands on a medium case 4.1 diff)... i would need someone with the proper tools to install it into the diff (i can install the actual diff itself into the car)
and then i can report back my findings... and trust me... i'll try and break it

You'll also need a complete set of shims for both the pinion position and the output flanges. The BMW list price on a "set" isn't cheap, especially if you'll need several sets for each diff.

We always measure rear ends and order the proper shims here at work. I don't think a whole set is needed in stock to setup a diff.
I believe he's talking about servicing an LSD unit, not the entire diff itself.
