Bad sound in my driveline - metal on metal

On my way to work today I heard a nasty sound coming from my driveline that is there when there is torque on the motor, but not so much as higher speeds. I heard something here and there a little bit ago, but hadn't inspected it. It got really bad today and sounds like there is something dragging right above the cat.

Put it up at work today and it sounds like the dragging is right about the cat. I put a new tranny in the car a couple months back. I was thinking maybe the center support bearing came loose, but some people at work think it might be my u joints.

What do you guys think it is? Am I going to do anything real bad if I drive it home?

sounds like a CSB problem to me. I don't think I've ever actually seen a BMW U-joint go bad..

I put a new CSB in too, so I bet its just loose.

Hmm, the usual cause of failure of the rubber mount of a CSB is binding u-joints in the drive shaft. I've seen lots of bad drive shafts and so have the rebuilders...

Replacing the CSB for failure of the mount and not replacing the drive shaft is typically followed in short order by failure of the new CSB. I don't know if that's what happened here or if there's some other problem. I wouldn't drive the car until I knew why the noise was there and whether complete drive shaft failure was a possibility.

I had a similar problem. My CSB was destroyed and the whole thing was digging into the exhaust heatshield.

Well what they are saying is that the CSB fails because of bad U joints.. Just make sure all the guibo and diff bolts are tight, along with the CSB.

Gonna park it for the next couple days and pull the exhaust this weekend to see what is up.

Oh man, I have to dig up the picture of what was left off my last CSB. :p Why it would be relevant to this thread, I have no idea, but maybe it can show how bad it can get without the U-joints even flinching. :p

I remember that picture drift... yea, it was like a hair-ball.... hahaha, and your problem, it sounds like you would be better off with a new/rebuilt driveshaft+CSB.

guibos turn into hairballs, not CSBs. those i think just rip.

yeah, you're right, I did mean the guibo (and drift had that pic of his guibo). just little brain fart...
