    4.10 LSD swap

Will a 4.10lsd from a 89 325i auto swap into a 91 318is 5spd? If so is there any way to tell what shape a diff is in if it is already pulled?
    Thanx

Ok so I swapped in the 3.73LSD and it whent in fairly easily. Much quieter then my worn out 4.10. However, now I am hearing a very slight whine at like 50+ mph but only when coasting or decelerating. Also it clunks when changing or engaging gears. Does that sound like a CV joint going?

that means the 3.73 was on its way out too. But just hasnt started making too much noise. I assume you changed the fluid in it?
I just bought a 89 325 and it clunks like something terrible. Reminds me of driving an old chevy with bad UV joints

I checked, changed the fluid and it was clean. The whine doesnt sound like its comming from the diff. I am seriously thinking about installing new wheel bearings as I have been thinking they may be going. I checked the u joints and there is no play. It just seems like there is slack somewhere in the rear end and that is the culprit of the clunking and whine. On a different note I love the gearing of the 3.73! I lose a little off the line but on the highway it soooo makes up for it.

u-joints can become noisy, clunky and can create alot of vibrations when going bad.
