    Different CSB's?

I just bought a used driveshaft from a local e30 guy and the CSB mounting points are wider than the one i took off of my car.

Does anyone know what year the driveshaft changed on e30's.

I think it was 09/1987. Have you checked realoem.com?

There is a difference in the CSB on E30s. Last year mine went out ('91 325i) and I was planning on replacing it from a friends' E30 which he was parting out ('87 325is). Neither of us noticed the difference in the part itself until we started to put it in the car and realized things weren't lining up correctly. Below is a picture I snapped comparing the two....the older one is on the left with the white tape-thing stuck to it. Notice how the mounting holes are spaced farther apart.

There's also a second difference too. In addition to the improper spacing of the mounting holes, the crown portion of the CSB (which tucks up into the tunnel itself) is wider and taller - a greater circumerence if you will - than the newer cars. Its not a big difference in terms of size, but enough to make installing one impossible.

      Hope this helps.

There's also a difference between the inner diameters of the bearings themselves. The shafts on earlier cars had bigger outer diameters where the bearing slides onto it. I bought a CSB for an 89 325i thinking it would fit my 90 325iS. No go. The inner diameter was much bigger than the one I needed.

I made the mistake of installing the new CSB without comparing it to the old one after buying it from the dealer. It was so stuck on I had to drill out the welds and weld the old piece to the new bearing. Pain in the ass.

I just bought a driveshaft from an '86 ETA, and I'm going to need the newer CSB mount for my car. It's in fantastic shape otherwise...can I swap in a late model CSB, or is the above post accurate? Are the internal diameters actually different, preventing an older driveshaft from being used?

Order the CSB that matches the chassis. It directly fits.

yeah, I'm running a '90 driveshaft in a 2-87 eta shell- just get the bearing that fits the
                  shell.

The flanges may be different on the earlier cars, though- check your guibo...

Yeah, I'm going to have to yank a small output flange to match the shaft. The trans is from an 87 eta, and has the large giubo.
