    Automatic Tranny

I have an automatic transmission in an e30 that I just purchased. It is a 6/87 build and has an M20B25 i motor. It seems to shift weird. It down shifts as I slow down almost like an SMG tranny, and I have to get it really high in the revs to get it to up shift (over 5k rpm). After it is warmed up it will not shift higher than 3rd or will not shift into 4th gear OD.

Is there a separate ECU for the trans? or is there a specific ECU for an automatic equipped E30. When I purchased the car it had a lot of spare parts. I notice that there was an extra 0 261 200 153 ECU among the extra parts. The car is running on an 0 261 200 173 ECU. I noticed that there is also an 0 261 200 525 listed for the e30, typically for Automatics. Should I be running the 153, 173 or 525 ECU or is there no difference?

Anything else I should check for? I checked the fluid once already and it seemed to be fine, doesn't mean that it is though.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I just finished working on my autotragic and from what you say I would say you need to adjust your kick down cable and accelerator pedal stop.

After adjustment, test each gear individually then post back.

the e30 automatic trans is made by ZF, called the 4hp22

there is NO electric or vacuum control on it
the 4hp22 is ONLY controled hyrdo-mechanicly
the ECUs (or DMEs) are all interchangable

I agree with kenika65 about the detent cable
but also consider changeing the filter and filling with fresh ATF and a bottle of Lucas

Sounds like a similar problem I have. When its cold it won't shift out of first for a while. Then it will not go back into first when I stop. Subsequent starts are from 2nd so it will only shift twice. Turns out the governor valve was stuck cuz it got crud in it. I pulled the tailcone off and took off the gov and flushed the shaft by starting the engine with the governor off. Made sure the gov valve moved freely and shes all better now. I hope I flushed all the crap out or it will just get stuck again. I had hoped it was only a kickdown cable for mine but its never that easy for me.

Google zf 4hp22 and you will get a bunch of hits on Volvo and Range Rover sites and there is a lot of info there on this tranny.

my problem is the seals in between the pump and clutch-basket "A".
