In the US, we can check www.car-parts.com for used parts. It's a database to which junk yards upload their inventories. It's pretty easy to check for a transmission for a '85 535i. I bet there's a similar service in the UK and/or Europe. I learned enough German to fumble through something like that for Germany, but it wasn't automated. Is that the same box that came in the old opel gsi's and some jags?
I have been looking around for one and they seem to be few and far between, and if they are around they're pricey! In terms of extending the centre shaft and choice of clutch/flywheel combo what would you suggest ?
cheers

You might try checking with the local breaking yards to see if they have a locator service that they use.
Here's an application chart for 265's:

It is a 5 speed, but it has an overdrive unlike the ZF. Its overall ratio spread is close to that of the 420G. It's also very robust. The "normal" 265's have a 3.83 first gear and .81 fifth. I've heard that the versions used in the E30 M3 had a 3.38 first gear instead, but have not confirmed. Note that I am *NOT* talking about the dogleg box.Leave a comment:

That box is still 5 speed only though isn't it?Since the Getrag 265 has a removable bellhousing, you could use an auto trans bellhousing for the M60 and mill an adapter plate to bolt the 265 to it. The 265 has a rear case section similar to the rear case of the 260, with an abundance of bolts close to the back of the trans. You could either weld something to the 265 rear case or machine something to bolt up to the case bolts that are already there.
I do have a s14 with one of them bolted to it but it's my daily driver so can't really butcher it.... Yet.
I'd still rather find something non electronic tcase wise and get some mounting points welded to the m5 6spd.
I have been looking at ford ranger pickups tcases and alike but it's very hard to get an understanding of what its like from web pix.Leave a comment:

I definitely need overdrive as i will be doing a fair bit of mileage and want to have a nice low cruising ratio.
I certainly wanted to be able to utilise the m5 6 speed. Back to the drawing board.
This is what I have so far btw: an ix subframe and x5 sump, Im looking for a scrap v8 block to bolt up temporarily for measuring etc.Leave a comment:

Looks like the rear output is on the drop rather than centered.Leave a comment:

it looks like the F/R outputs are both on the same plane. That won't work - BMW cars have the input and rear output on one plane, and the front output on it's own.
but, those pictures are terrible, it's hard to really see which are the inputs and outputs.Leave a comment:

E46 is an open diff. it's crap, you don't want it behind an S62.I have been searching high and low for any appropriate Tcase with nothing electrical on to use but anything bar my ones seem crap or too big or just plain wrong.
It was mentioned about that the e46 one is no a good choice? Is this due to it acting like an open diff? i.e. loses power and lack lock up?
Does anyone know a way I can permanently wire the x5 Tcase to be locked permanently?
Cheers

you don't want to lock a t-case permanently either. you may as well weld all your diffs together. just don't try to turn a corner, ever. :p
it may be possible to use an aftermarket controller with one of the electronic diffs, but there's gotta be an easier/simpler way.Leave a comment:

Oh yeah... I went back and re-read. The E46 carrier is 6mm narrower than the E53, but the QDF4N for 2002 is 16mm narrower than the QDF6N for Z3 4 cylinder.Leave a comment:
