    Summer E30M60 Build

Hello All. I figured I'd wait till I hit the point of no return until I start a build thread, and I think I'm at that stage My friend and I are building this together during out last summer break before the start of college to help split the cost among two high schoolers...

The starting point, a 1990 325IS just past 150k miles. Its been an absolute blast to drive, and I'm itching to get it back on the road :P

Here's the M60 I picked up at a junkyard in Ohio. Has 100k miles. Don't mind the transmission next to it. Its from a 328i (in great condition, if you'd like to buy it shoot me a PM!). The harness was mostly cut, but I picked up a fresh one recently. Even though its from an auto, it shouldn't be an issue from what I've read (I hope :D)

Here are the custom mounts from garagistic. They look absolutely fantastic, thanks for the great product! On the driver's side, you can also see the modified/carved-out oil lines from the original motor mount.

The old M20 on the way out

I cut out just the top half of the subframe

Revshift mounts should be here soon, and I hope to test fit the engine in the bay shortly after.
When I got the remote booster setup from a cl seller, he only gave me the booster, master cylinder, and part of the linkage. If anybody is parting out an e34/32, I'd love to buy the rest of the linkages!

Just a quick question that would be awesome if anyone could answer...
    1. 5 speed route is the current plan. I bought an oem clutch kit for a 328i (240mm diameter) and a flywheel for an M60. However the M60 flywheel takes a 265mm clutch. The M62 flywheel takes a 240mm clutch. Will I be able to install the oem M62 wheel and mate it properly to the clutch, and then to a e34 530i manual trans?

Any comment/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking

      Got some more updates.

The unmolested harness I picked up, with the starter cable and a 404 DME.

I got a low temp (85 Degrees C) thermostat, to keep the engine running nice and cool.

OEM Sachs clutch kit for an E36 328i which should work with the 5 speed trans (and M62 Flywheel? Please chime in if you know for sure!)

A Mishimoto Z3M radiator I got from username "noid." Thanks for the great radiator!

These bad boys just came in the mail. After I seal up the engine and give it a thorough degrease, I wanna throw it in the bay for a test fit.

      Thanks Again

No, the stock m62 dual mass flywheel won't work with an m52 clutch. It has a raised hub that interferes with the clutch disc. I have a bunch of pics in this subforum from a year or two ago, you should be able to find them by searching. You may be able to machine the hub down, but in the end, it's still a wear item that shouldn't really be re-used. You'll be lucky if you can find someone to resurface it to begin with. I just went with the UUC e39 540i/M5 flywheel.

I'm also interested to see if the stock m52 clutch can hold the m60's torque. I looked into what the turbo e36 328i guys were putting down on stock clutches and it seemed like anything above 300 lbs ft was iffy, so I went with the Clutchmasters fx100.

Thanks for the reply JGood! I see the lip that you are talking about. I guess I might as well invest in a M62 JB lightweight flywheel.

          Here are some updates.

          Spacers installed. Passenger side

          Driver's side

          Booster/Master cylinder removed

          Test fitting the engine

          She fits!

The passenger's side mount in the most rearward position

The driver's side mount. This is where I started having some troubles. Here it is the rearward position again

It doesn't sit flush against either the engine or the chassis

In the forward position however, she sits fine

I'm guessing its because I still had the sound deadening on the firewall. It may need some tapping with a sledgehammer at two specific points

I had to cut out a tiny piece of the battery tray to help place the engine in.

I took the engine back out, and that's how it's currently sitting. I want to give everything a thorough degrease before going forward. Things to do are to source the flywheel and make the harness adapter, and then I hope to fire her up!

Sub'ed! Can't wait too see what you do.

BTW - I'm not an expert at telling how many miles a motor has on it, but 100k seems a bit low for all the road grime on that thing. Did you run a carfax on the vin?

Is there a vin on m60 motors?

Thanks for the subs! Yeah, I was put off by all the grime on the engine too, but when I ran a car fax, it turned up clean and matched up with what the seller was claiming. Can't really complain too much because I got it on the cheap :P

The engine was originally from an auto, and so the cooling system accumulator had two extra holes for a transmission fluid radiator. I threaded the two outlets to seal them up, but found out that no hardware store in the area carries the M14x1.25 pitch I threaded it in... However, a frantic google search while running around town revealed that spark plugs use that exact thread. I came home and slapped on some crummy old spark plugs, and it fit perfectly!

I guess it is also a pretty popular lug bolt size. I'll prolly go to the junkyard tomorrow and hope to scavenge some last-chance bolts!

We ususally weld those holes shut. Its a much safer approach. Last thing you want is something happening back there. Its not fun to work in tight spaces like that!

Pm us if you want us to welded it shut for you. We offer that service.

@garagistic- Sorry, but I think I'll have to respectfully decline. Need every opportunity possible to practice my welding :P

@MonkeyMadness- Wow, that looks like a perfect mod for the setup! Super easy heater hose hookup, huh? I still haven't sourced a welder yet, but I think I will definitely give that a shot as my confidence increases.

                      Got a trans today! 5 speed from a 94 530i with 91k miles!

Got this in the mail today!!!

The stock E36 328i clutch is a gamble. Can only wait and see if it gives desirable results :P

Unfortunately, the seller did not include the hardened steel bolt ring or the flywheel/crankshaft bolts, and he said he won't be able to ship it out to me until Friday afternoon. That means I won't be able to mate the engine to the trans until next week at the earliest :/

After round one of degreasing, starting to put things back together. Wire harness, power steering pump, and alternator installed.

This, and ditch the TCS throttle body and order a new non-TCS intake boot
