    E34 540i Automatic Harness Modifications

Can anyone shed more light on what exactly needs to be done to the automatic harnesses to make it perfect for a manual swap? I imagine removing the bundle for the transmission computer is at minimum required, but what else is there? Does anyone have wiring diagrams showing the two layouts of the harnesses? Thanks.

I picked this harness up off eBay for under $100 versus the $200+ others are looking for so I am willing to do some work to make it work for my swap. I'm just looking for a little guidance. Thanks guys.

Here is what I did find, hopefully I don't screw this harness up too badly. My German isn't great...

There are no modifications required to use an auto e34/e32 harness on an m60 with a manual trans. The extra wiring takes up a tad bit more space, but has no effect on anything.

I have no idea what's in that picture. It's not an m60 engine harness though.

Thanks JGood. The items in the picture are the part of the harness that run to the transmission control unit, to the transmission itself and to some other box.

I've looked through the electrical diagrams for the 530i and have identified what could be removed.

While nothing needs to go, I like the clean look of no "extra" connectors etc.

Just make sure you have a chip or whole computer from a manual car because you will get some weird idle hang and reving with an auto ecu.

So can i just cut all the auto crap off or do I need to trick the system into thinking its in "Park" or "Neutral" ???
If so how or what do i have to do?

You don't need to do anything, if you absolutely don't want the auto stuff just trace it all back to the plugs and de-pin it or cut it off flush. The thing you do want to look for is the extra wiring in the 530i harness that I removed like what is pictured in the wiring harness sticky. You also need to add the starter wires to your X20 as they are run differently from the other BMW harnesses. There are one or two white wires with ring terminals running parallel with the main starter cable wire. I am using an auto DME and have no running issues whatsoever.

                  Ok so...

The small plug with two blade female.
Is the ecu cooling fan. Not needed

Three pin plug "black and thin" is an AC plus plug. Not Needed.

The white plug ABS. Not needed.

The white relay is the Dme relay.
The blue relay is the fuel pump relay.
The Orange relay is the fuel tank "cutoff" relay?

The only other one I have not found is the 2nd black plug that looks the same as the abs plug. But isn't shown in the pic above. Guessing its the auto shifter plug from the center console???
                  I'm not sure????????

Also this harness above is exact to mine with the exception that I have the auto, and this in manual.
With that being said the pic above and my harness has the long pig tail off the passenger side (shown middle of picture right side) as the starter plug "Anlasser" this plug has three wires..
Has anybody else seen this on there harnesses?

Yes the thick black wire infornt of the body grommet on the harness is a ground.

I used the Dakota digital convertor from summit racing. It's cheaper and a lot cleaner to install.

Bumping an old thread in hopes of getting some clarification. I'm in the process of cleaning up my engine wiring harness. Its from a 95 540iA but I want to get rid of all the auto transmission wiring. Here is what I have

So from the photo, here are my descriptions and questions on what I can do with this:

                              A) Auto Transmission Control Unit
                              B) Engine Control Unit
                              C) From what I read above, this is the ABS. Half of the wires go into A, the other half go into B.
                              D) I think this is the ASC+T but not sure. All of the wires go into A.
                              E) No idea what this is and what I should do with it.
                              F) Relay
                              G) Relay
                              H) Relay
                              I) Relay and plug holder

So it appears my relays are differently colored than described above. Can anyone tell me what each relay is for? Also is the relay and plug holder necessary or can I just detach the relays from that and remove it? It doesnt appear to be in the pictures above.

As for removing all the auto transmission wiring, am I safe just to cut all the wires that go to the TCU and tape them off, or what is the best way? What do I do with the wires that go from the TCU to the ECU or any of the other wires that are spidered into the main engine harness?

Sorry for the noob question but i'm not the greatest with electrical and dont want to mess up my harness. Any input is appreciated!

                              Thanks!
