I have a 3.25 and my 1st gear is far from useless. Actually, with my new 235's, I have to really try to get it to break loose, and that's with the m60b44. The 2.93 I had in before felt about the same in 1st, but 3rd gear and up felt really long. M60's aren't exactly monster v8's...

The zf320 and 420g gearing just sucks for us. First is too short, but to get it to a usable length you'd have to use a diff that would kill the acceleration after 2nd gear.

I don't know what the bmw trans ratios are like, but when I had my 2.93 in 2nd and 3rd felt long for me too.

** just looked it up, holy shit you guys have short ass 1st gears. 2nd and 3rd are kinda similar, but wow that's a huge difference. Almost, like, stump pulling gear ratios, lol.

It's a German thing... all the Getrags do that, even the ones GM uses. The profile of RPM drops from one ratio to the next is supposed to be ideal for best time-to-top speed from a dead stop... i.e. best for a small high strung engine to get a car up to speed on the autobahn.

Sorry for the lack of updates..she's been doing a lot of sitting in the garage. I fixed 2 of the three brake leaks. One, a leak from the reservoir, another from where my main power wire made contact with my left front line (melted right through it) and I have another that I can't seem to fix. Where the rear brake line comes from the proportioning valve. The funny thing is that's not even one the the lines I had to make.
I drove it to an Indy shop today to have them do some welding on my manifolds and TIG some V band clamps on for me. A good 25 minute drive, broken up by the time I spent on the side of the road waiting for it to cool down of course. I should be able to get it to an exhaust shop next week though. I'm thinking about doing an X pipe and magnaflow muffler. Still debating resonators..

Dude if you can afford it, go to advance auto or wherever and ask for the quietest muffler they have (in the size you need of course). Then go on summit racing and order up one of these:

Free Shipping - Quick Time Performance Electric Exhaust Cutouts with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Exhaust Cutouts at Summit Racing.

Seriously cutouts are the coolest / best things ever. It's kind of like a mullet, but for your exhaust. Love mine

I have magnaflow muffler. its pretty quite for idle and not to loud when I rev up.

Got my exhaust made. I wanted to use cutouts but they were just too expensive.

Sounds good, a little loud but I like it.
Dealing with this now..the exhaust shop didn't feel like putting my o2 sensors in so they just put plugs in the bungs. I got one out but the other...I have no fucking idea how they got it in there that tight. I rounded it out completely using the right size Allen head I pulled so hard. Then I dropped the whole exhaust and welded a nut on but that ripped off pretty quick. I started grinding too with no luck

                So fucked up.

You got a torch? Because it'll definitely come off with enough heat.

Chances are they welded that bung and spatter got in there and fouled the threads. I bet they just screwed that plug in there before it was even cooled off. Get that thing really really hot (like glowing) and try to get it to spin with a chisel and hammer.

I stripped one of my o2 bung threads, so I cut it out in a square shape slightly bigger then the bung, and then took a spare pipe, welded a new bung to it, cut it out in an identical shape square, and welded that to the exhaust as a patch. That way I didn't have to worry about messing up the alignment of the pipes and shit, and I could do it off the car.

Just a suggestion, if it comes to that.

So my trip to bimmerfest is going great. We are staying the night at lake gaston so I brought paddle boards

Then leaving town I sat in a bunch of long traffic lights and it starts to overheat so I tried to go fast to cool it down and of course the paddle board flies off, rips my roof rack off with it and fucked up my car nice and good

And then after I pulled over and ran out in the road to get it, I decided to open the hood so it would cool faster and this happened

Holy shit... well if it's any consolation I really couldn't tell that the roof was fucked up on your car.

As far as the overheating goes - I'm gonna be trying two things (though standard solutions should work for you, since m60 swaps are so common):

*hood vents - on most cars this lowers temps by 10-15 degrees

*fan shroud - should help... maybe/probably/mostlikely

Could also be random air bubbles in your coolant. I'm pretty much on the way back to where you guys are going, I have an adapter that'll hook up to your reservoir and put a vacuum on it to suck out any bubbles, let me know if you wanna try it out tomorrow (if you didn't go straight home that is) just let me know

Damn that's sucks. Hope everything works out.

Made it to bimmerfest without even having to pull my toolbox out. This was on the way home sitting through the toll traffic

It was pretty funny, every person took a picture. That tunnel was really fun though. Ordering a mishimoto radiator now..
Thanks jalopi, wish I had of checked tapatalk earlier, I would have taken you up on that

Made a decision on the rad yet? Think the z3 one'll fit in your car just fine, clearance will be tight but it should be a lot more than my junk.

Also, if you've got a spare reservoir cap laying around you can drill a hole in it and stick a hose barb in. Fire her up and apply vacuum, might help, who knows, not much to lose though
